Attitude sets the goals of life. It conditions vision of an individual. It is a harbinger of what is in store. Part of the destiny is beyond the control of man. But an individual can to some extent work out to realize his educational and career ambitions. The following quotation collected from a web site makes interesting reading. “We cannot control life’s difficult moments, but we can choose to make life less difficult. We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world, but we can control the atmosphere of our minds. Too seldom, we choose to control things we cannot. Too seldom, we choose to control, what we can- our attitude.” John Maxwell (Quoted from a web site). The following age old prayer makes the point pellucid. : “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”. In this article, I try to paraphrase the above concepts.
Attitude of life: Attitude of life defines ethical values of life. X is a person who leads a life of rectitude. His boss asks him to commit an irregularity to favor a party –Y. X responds positively indicating that that he would obey the instructions of his boss. Y’s work is not done. Y asks X why he is not obeying his boss’s instructions. Without mincing words, X responds to his query as follows.. “If my boss instructs me to do any thing that conform to the relevant rules and regulations, I would comply his instructions forthwith. If he asks me to do any irregularity or irregularities, never-the-less, I would still, without any hesitation obey my boss. You must understand one thing clearly here that in such an eventuality the body of the ‘Rules and Regulations’ become my boss and not the one who is physically positioned above me in hierarchical terms.’ Right attitude bestows peace of mind.
Attitude could be conditioned by developing right vision and vice versa:
To visualize a concept, a situation or a development is not an easy thing. The ability to visualize is partly an inborn quality or virtue. Part of it can be cultivated.
(1)A Cultural Hall is under construction for a small community. Leading members of the community participate in all the deliberations relating to approval of conceptual plans etc. When the layout is set on the ground, the building layout looks unimpressive. When earthwork excavation is in progress, some members make a lot of hue and cry about inappropriate planning and seek to make certain changes. When the masonry work is progressing, some members of the community criticize the architect and the executive members who cleared the proposal. Later on, the Architect is called to appraise his conceptual drawings in the light of the plethora of suggestions received for modifications. The Architect gives a patient hearing. He calmly explains the members -“There is nothing wrong with the conceptual plans. The problem with regard to visualization. You could not be able to visualize how the cultural hall would be after it is completed. I have the mental perspicuity of how the building would come out ultimately to serve functional use as well as aesthetical value. This is because I have cultivated such a vision over years of my practice”. The building would look something different, when it reaches lintel level, it would be altogether different when it reaches roof-level, and it would be different after casting of roof-slab and after the finishing work would be over, the building would look entirely different. When we start using it, the impressions we have about it, would undergo further change.” When the building is completed in all respects, true to the views of the Architect, the building is found aesthetically appealing and functionally useful.
(2) A friend of mine requests me to accompany him for shopping. He takes me to an apparel shop. He wants to purchase a cut-piece for stitching a shirt for himself. He selects a floral cloth piece which in my view is only fit to be a blouse piece. He asks me for a frank opinion about his selection. I express my disapproval to his selection. Ignoring my explicit opinion, he purchases the same cloth and gets it stitched into a shirt. When he wears it, I am awestruck. It is indeed splendid. I realized that I could not visualize how a floral cloth piece would look when it takes the shape of a shirt.
3. In my formative years of my career, I was in a humble position in a certain organization. Cultural club of the organization organizes annual cultural events. Encouraged by a friend, I wrote a small playlet for the first time in my life. The authority that matters rejected the script as unfit for enactment on stage. We had no idea about its stage worthiness. However, we pressed our demand for its clearance. We did all our best to influence the arbiter to whom the issue was referred. In the end, when the playlet was enacted, it was really good and received public applaud. It was my debut in a minor role and received accolades from the fellow members of the organization.
The important point I would like to underscore here is that none of us could have the right vision about the dramatic elements the script contained. Perhaps the scripts that make interesting reading may be unsuitable for enactment on the stage. Vision could be cultivated. It is necessary for the student/ manager/ leader to cultivate vision. Vision and attitude are inextricably interconnected with each other. It is also true to state that one’s attitude is also conditioned by the vision he develops on values of life, the mission or purpose of life and goals he would like to vigorously pursue - what he wants to become or achieve etc.
