Exam Time: Food for thought
Posted on : 12-04-2008 - Author : Dr Roopa Dittakavi

During examination many of us do not take care of our food intake, because of which we suffer in many ways. With examination round the corner, our stress levels increase and eating the right foods will keep energy levels up. If the brain gets the right nutrients, we will be able to think quicker and have better memory which is very important for us. Let us take a look at healthy food habits during examination.

As we know that water is very important for life. It also helps us a lot during exams. Because of the stress levels increasing there is lot of dehydration in the body which leads to fatigue and headache. Consuming a lot of water will helps to control dehydration we should drink at least 2 liters of water daily so that the body is well hydrated.

An exam for many of us is late night studies, for which we find ways and means to be awake and popular ways is having coffee. Coffee as such has advantages like it stimulates the nervous system; helps relieve mental and muscular fatigue. It also increases alertness and also boosts energy levels, which has made it very popular. It is said that 20 to 200gms of caffeine per day, will give you all the above benefits. They is also de-caffeinated coffee available in the market which can be better than the normal coffee. In fact, tea also helps us in the same way as coffee and also has some advantages like it helps in relaxing our coronary artery and promotes blood circulation in the body.
Hence, tea can also be a perfect substitute to coffee. We should try and drink a cup of water for every cup of coffee or tea. (Is in addition to water we take during meal-times) Water will also somewhat decrease your desire for coffee or tea. Lot of milk and buttermilk which are high on nutrient value should be consumed instead of coffee or tea.

Scientific research has proved that our diet has a direct impact on the brain functioning. Hence, along with the liquid diet we should also take care of the solid food that we take in. Eating right food helps us in improving our memory, concentration, have control on our emotions and have better coordination between our thought and actions. (Body and mind)

Never be on empty stomach during examination and at the same time do not force yourself to eat extra during exams. Because both of these are harmful to us. So always have light food which is easily digestible which helps in being mentally quick. Avoid heavy food as it makes us lethargic and causes drowsiness.

During Examination we should have high protein food such as, soy products, eggs, and fish. A third of the brain is made up of fats, the intake of proteins and fats like Sunflower and almond oil are not known to have immediate or short-term effects, they are important part of our diet so that the brain does not get ‘tired’ and ‘worn out’. We should also give importance to carbohydrates with provide energy and as the brain uses up around a fifth of the body’s energy requirements, they are important for body functioning. Grains and pulses contain complex carbohydrates that take longer to digest. They release energy slowly which is important to for us to because they provide stamina for long hours.

Vitamins are important for normal functioning of brain and nerves system. They also help in overall health of us. We should include a lot of whole grain and enriched grain products like bread, rice, fortified cereals and legumes. Minerals also play a major role in nerve function; the major sources of these nutrients are milk products, calcium-fortified foods, apricots, bananas, grapefruit, kiwi, oranges, cherries, strawberries, potatoes, nuts, green vegetables, and meat.

We should not forget the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables which helps us to increase the ability to concentrate. Nuts like almond, walnuts, figs and dates are said to improve memory. We should take many small meals which will help us. Many of us take a lot of snacks while studying these snacks will help us but we should take care that they are not spicy, oily and fried foods because they cause acidity and take long time to digest.

It is a universal truth that healthy body makes healthy mind, hence let us take care of our self and do well in Exams.
