Plan Your Career Now!
Posted on : 16-02-2008 - Author : Dr I Satyasree

It is imperative to plan a career effectively that suits your personality. Job hopping has become the buzz-word and long gone are the days of lifetime employment. The need to plan careers early in life has become the order of the day.

Changing job from one institution to another seems to be the present trend. The success of your career depends on perfect planning and efficient organization.

To develop a career plan, you need to think about what you want to do and find out more about the level of education, kind of training and skills you need to achieve in your career. Proper assessment of your skills and interests should take top priority.

You should think wisely about what you enjoy doing, what you are good at, what strengths you have and see if all these match with the ethics and values you possess.

Firstly, you need to set a career goal for yourself. In the present day scenario of cut-throat competition and little opportunities, children are struggling to realize their goals.

It is such a sad state of affairs to note that young students, equipped with a University degree, are becoming not only unemployed but unemployable because of lack of employable skills. The industry looks for candidates who hold a set of skills so that they can do multitasking and fit easily in the organizational setup. So, there is an increasing demand for schools and colleges that offer a comprehensive program that best suits a candidate’s career goal.

Now-a-days choosing a career is done at a very early stage in life unlike in the past. Earlier, there used to be only conventional types of jobs. However, the job scenario has changed a lot. There are so many new and exiting openings luring candidates to opt for them. As there are a plethora of opportunities opening up, career choice is being done, surprisingly, at the high school level itself. Several financial institutions and banks are coming forward to offer financial assistance in case there is a need. Hence, career planning has become easy and affordable.

Therefore, first you need to identify the goals and objectives of an organization and see if your aspirations match with them. If not, you have to immediately identify and make an action plan to reach the aim. And, you should also set a time frame for achieving it, otherwise your aim transforms into a wish and this ends as an unfulfilled dream. An unfulfilled dream in turn becomes an obsolete goal because of the fast-paced changes that are happening in this technological age.

Secondly, you have to be up to date and be in touch with the latest trends emerging at a staggering speed. Accept change and be flexible to adapt it. This helps you to go with the current. Observe the latest trends and be prepared to face the challenges. In the context of organizations resorting to adopt the technique of hiring and firing at a recurring frequency, try to be alert and learn new skills, concepts and techniques which the market needs.

Take training that enhances your employment potential. This will put you on a competitive edge over others. Keep interacting with experts and professional so that you may receive some inputs about the emerging trends. Read newspapers, journals, magazines and career guides to know about current affairs, competitive examinations and employment opportunities. And also attend career fairs, which are held frequently in almost all the cities. Do some research about the requirements of the industry or the organization in which you want to work. Take membership in professional organizations in your field of interest. Make efforts to network people in the area of your choice.

After the tedious job hunt is over, and you landed up with your dream job, don’t just sit back and relax. Take a stock of the new job and see what is expected of you by the employer. Now set out to improve your leadership qualities, communication skills and team-building efforts so that you may amicably fit in the organizational structure you are working with. You may now begin contributing to the organizational growth and in turn you too may grow with the organization.

Be pro-active and use every opportunity that comes your way to improve your talent. Convert failure as a stepping stone to success. Dream big! But do not day dream because, daydreams end up in disappointments. Make your dreams become success stories.

Have a positive outlook towards life as this positive attitude helps you discover your strengths. Transform your weaknesses into your strengths by constantly improving your performance. Be a learner always. There is no end to learning. Stick to principles and lead a value-based life so that you may become a shining example in the organization that you are working with.
