Way to Healthy Mind
Posted on : 17-08-2011 - Author : Devika Bhatnagar

Mind power is more powerful than physicalpower. It is a wonderful gift by God to human beings. Though a lot of new technological changes and many new methods are being invented to decrease the work burden, human mind is greater than anything. Unfortunately this mind is being abused or not being used to the optimum level. If we can use the mind properly, we will be winners everywhere.

You might have heard the story of Rabbit and Lion from the Panchatantra. It is one of the best examples of sensible knowledge. Nowadays, students once they complete their school life, start using shortcut methods for their studies. One day while taking class, I observed that one of my students was using calculator for 8x5 = 40. I was shocked to see the incident how their mind was habituated to using calculator for small multiplication.

Impact of T.V and Movies:
A student who is weak in studies may remember the full movie/serial stories with dialogues or he may tell you all the names of cricketers belonging to all the countries without missing any. It all depends on the interest, if you watch TV for more than one hour you will be hypnotized by TV. Your mind will not allow you to concentrate on anything other than T.V. You will feel lazy and would not like to work, even to take a glass of water you will feel lethargic. As per statistics, 96% of  americans watching TV for 5 to 8 hours in a day are thus dedicating their eyes to T.V programmes and 4% people have reading habits.

A healthy mind is something we all want. The ups and downs of life test our energies and will to live. We struggle everyday to do the “right thing”. Yet, that does not give immunity from adversities. Just like the changes of seasons, we cannot appreciate summer if we have not experienced winter and vice versa. Both seasons have their purpose in our lives. We must have to learn to adapt to them. We all have little lapses in memory like leaving the keys in the door, forgetting someone’s name or missing an appointment. Rarely do we think we are getting old or senile. Most times it’s due to too much data entry in our brain. May be you didn’t concentrate enough on what it was you were supposed to remember.Research shows that brain power can increase with mental activities in older people. Aging does not mean automatically losing mental capacity. The National Institute of Aging has conducted a series of tests that prove most dramatic memory decline occurs around age 70, if it occurs at all. Even though memory may fade with time, thinking ability remains strong.

Vocabulary and reasoning skills often improve with age.No matter what your age, exercising your brain may make the difference between using it and losing it. Or if you are young and have older family members or friends who seem to be losing memory, encouraging brain activity can help. Activities such as doing crossword puzzles, playing word games or cards strengthen the synapses between brain cells in memory transmission areas. Physical exercise can increase mental abilities 20% to 30 %, according to recent studies. Journal writing and working with your hands to build or create can help as well. For older adults who sense memory loss occurring, use mental helps such as calendars, calculators, list making, and group discussions and relax. Worrying about what you’re going to forget can cause a mental block.

Trying to keep a healthy body and mind is not a very difficult task but it requires certain changes in your lifestyle and living patterns. A healthy body and mind along with a healthy spirit and approach to life can only sustain if you eat right, exercise and have a positive attitude in life. For this you need to alter the overall approach in life and learn to take even the worst incitements in your stride. It will not be easy to attain such levels but if you try then you can certainly change a lot of things around you.

Positive Thinking and Good Changes in A person can feel healthy only if he or she thinks healthy and thus try and incorporate these changes in your approach to life. Start your day by doing at least one good deed every day like giving a beggar alms, or feeding a stray animal or even trying to help out someone in need. This will give your more happiness than a shopping experience also. The importance of having a healthy body and healthy mind is supreme to achieving any kind of happiness in your life and this is something that should be the main concern of everyone’s life. It has been seen that the best way to achieve a healthy mind is from having a positive attitude and positive mental outlook. Hence for this you need to get rid of the pessimistic approach in life and focus on the positive side of everything. For example, read books on positive thinking and create an environment of positive thoughts around you also.

Physical Exercises:
Along with creating this environment you also should try and remember to exercise your mind because this is the only method to improve mental health. The other method is to exercise physically also as it flushes out toxins in the body and helps to create a positive outlook in life. Exercising helps to maintain a healthy body and thus a healthy body will help you to gain a healthy mind also. To get a healthy body you should focus on a good diet, drink plenty of water and have lots of fruits and raw vegetables.

Aerobics:
These forms of exercises help to soothe the mind and help the body to rejuvenate and they are also for getting rid of depression. Basically there are various kinds of workouts which one can do for avoiding symptoms of depression. Some of the most popular workouts for helping the body and the mind get rid of negative vibes are aerobics and weight training. Since aerobics is a high impact workout and is done along with loud music it helps to heighten the heartbeats of the body. Hence your body comes out of the sedate and upset mindset and enjoys the process of healing and getting rid of this stress and anxiety.

Meditation:
An ideal solution here is meditation, which is one of the oldest arts of India. Meditation is considered as the path to achieve godhood and various forms of meditation have developed, but the aim is common. It helps to relax the mind and the body along with improving concentration. Meditation also helps you to keep an altered state of awareness and helps the mind to maintain its self-observing attitude.

Basically meditation helps you to get back in touch with your soul and promotes positivism along with getting rid of negative thoughts. due to stress and anxiety. There are many people who lead mechanical lifestyles and they are prone to mental problems that lead to health problems. These issues may be minor problems or they can also be fatal issues and hence these should not be taken lightly. Mental problems are the root cause for various kinds of health problems and thus the mind and the spirit should be provided with some form of rejuvenation and stress relief.

Conclusion:
Studies have proven that some forms of exercises have a greater impact on the mind and spirit as compared to other forms of exercises. These include forms of yoga, listening music, walking, playing games, sports and even dancing to some extent. The concept “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is very old but for ever it works wonderfully.
