Courses in Behavioural Sciences

School of Behavioural Sciences,under the Central University of Karnataka (CUK), is offering distinct courses in various areas of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The perfect combination of theory, practical, laboratory experiments, field experience  along with a ‘choice-based credit semester system, (CBCSS), makes these courses outstanding and valuable in nature. The CBCSS permits students to pick and design their courses of study. An additional attraction of CUK is its commitment to social inclusion.

As part of its policy, CUK has decided to exempt course and hostel fee for girl  students belonging to economicallyweaker sections, having an annual income less than 4.5 lakhs from the coming academic year  2012-13. The courses offered by the school of behavioural sciences are:
Diploma in Educational Counselling:
This exclusive 20-week programme can lead to exciting and challenging job opportunities in education, industry, health, management, human resources, and social services. In addition to providing theoretical perspectives in counselling, this programme also lays emphasis on supervised training, field work and internship. A graduate or a post-graduate from a recognised university, having studied any one of the following allied or elective or optional subjects:
Psychology, Psychological counselling, Social Work, education or Rehabilitation Sciences with 50 per cent marks in aggregate (including languages) may apply.
B.SC/M.SC INTEGRATED PSYCHOLOGY:
This is a unique course with exit options after three years with a B.Sc (Hon) degree or after five years with B.Sc (Hon) and M.Sc (Hon) degrees. An integrated programme such as this one will provide deeper understanding of the subject matter with continuity. This course is designed to be very flexible, enabling a student to develop a variety of knowledge and skills from a combination of subjects.

A student can choose his/her own combination of subjects from a basket of courses. On this fascinating journey, a student will gain knowledge and understanding of the different areas of psychology, develop valuable analytical and communication skills, and enhance one’s own ability to work both independently and collaboratively,all of which will put him/her very much in the frame when it comes to employment opportunities. Students aged up to 18 years and who have completed Class 12 / intermediate education from a recognised Indian or foreign university/ board or equivalent (foreign recognition to be as per AIU list) with a minimum of 50 per cent in aggregate may apply for this course.
M.SC PSYCHOLOGY:
This is a two-year post-graduate course in Psychology. The unique feature of this course is its ‘choice-based credit semester system’ (CBCSS). This provides the student with an opportunity design his/her own course from the range of courses available. Continuous evaluation and feedback will help students to improve their studies. This course will act as a base for rewarding careers in fields like counselling, human resource management, research, education, legal system, media, advertising, academics, rehabilitation, resource management and consultations.
Further, this course can be the gateway for doctoral-level research in the discipline. Students aged between 20-24 years, who have completed their under graduation from a recognised Indian or foreign university (foreign recognition to be as per AIU list) in any discipline and have secured a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate may apply for this course.

PH.D IN PSYCHOLOGY:
Through this programme, a research scholar acquires expert level knowledge in one’s chosen area within Psychology,develops methodological skills and conducts an original research. The thrust areas of research in the department are adolescent health, diverse and socially disadvantaged population, cross-cultural study of individual differences, humanitarian action, HIV/AIDS in relation to targeted population, reproductive health and sexuality, distributive justice, peace and conflicts, marital adjustment, organisational climate, disability studies and human rights. An M.Phil or a Masters’ degree or a degree recognised by the university for this purpose in a relevant or allied subject with at least 55 per cent aggregate score is mandatory.

MASTER Of SOCIAL wORK (MSw):
The department of social work aims to prepare students with professional knowledge, values and skills required for extensive social work practice. Through this programme, students achieve competence in problem identification, assessment, development of intervention plans and evaluation of practice. Students are also equipped with knowledge and the skills necessary to provide direct services, consultation, training, programme development, practice evaluation, social service research and community development. A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (preferences would be given to those possessing BSW degree) from a recognised Indian or foreign university (foreign
recognition to be as per AIU list) with at least 50 per cent aggregate score is mandatory.
INTEGRATED (B.A – MA) HISTORy:
Students who have completed Class  2/intermediate education in any subject with a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate are eligible to apply. This is a five- year, integrated course with an option of exit after three years. The candidate will be awarded a BA History (Hon) degree if they decide to leave after the successful  completion of the first three years. Students who successfully complete the five-year course will be awarded an MA degree in History.

PHD IN HISTORy:
Students with a minimum of 50 per cent marks at the Master’s level or with an M.Phil in History are eligible to apply for the Doctoral programme in History. Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit and entrance examination marks. All Indian national applicants have to write the entrance examination conducted by the university.
