Marine Engineering - for those who love sea

Based on international statistics, there is a considerable demand of trained marine officers, which is showing a growth in upward trend, by about 8 to 12%, with the numerical expansion of international shipping fleet. The demand-supply figure of international seafarers has been widened and there is a shortage of marine officers at present.
A career in Marine Engineering as Ship’s Engineer Officer is a lucrative and adventurous profession as well. A career in shipping industry is global in nature and seafarers are employed by any shipping company, around the world. Indian officers are in great demand in the international shipping industry because of their technical competence, communications skills and social behavior.
Marine engineering is a non-conventional field of engineering, as it comprises of a multidisciplinary curriculum consisting of mechanical, electrical, electronics, refrigeration and air conditioning engineering, all integrated in one. In addition, the curriculum consists of some specialized training modules associated with safety of life, fire fighting, safe practices of seafaring, operations, maintenance and management.

 The course is of 4 years duration and a Degree in Marine Engineering is awarded on the completion of course. In PRIME, candidates are admitted after an entrance examination, which is normally held in the month of June- July every year followed by viva-voice and medical examination.
The four years training at PRIME includes successful completion of the curriculum as
stipulated by DG Shipping, interpersonal skills, communication skills, organizational skills, physical fitness etc.

After the completion of Four Year Degree Programme at PRIME a candidate is recruited as Trainee Marine Engineer Officer for 6 months sea-time and then becomes fourth engineer after appearing class-IV part-B examinations. It takes about 7-9 years for a Trainee Marine Engineer Officer to get elevated to the rank of Chief Engineer, depending on individual capabilities and job opportunities available. The starting salary usually starts from Rs.40000 per month to Rs.60000 per month for the Trainee Marine Engineers and reaches to anywhere between 3 to 6 lacs a year after being a Chief Engineer.
