Glamour in Grammar
Posted on : 16-06-2008 - Author : Dr I Satyasree

People in general and students in particular dislike learning Grammar rules, more so specially, English Grammar rules. However, we should understand that Grammar has a crucial function in a language. Without grammatical rules, we will not be able to learn a foreign language like English. Hence, English Grammar plays a very important role in helping us enhance our proficiency. Whether it is in speaking or writing English, we should aim at 100% grammatical correctness. There is no compromise in this aspect. However, mastering mere rules will not help in improving proficiency levels. One should know how to use language in different contexts. For this, constant practice is required.

Several mistakes are committed by Indian students while using English. These mistakes have become so common that even highly educated people commit them in their daily social interactions. It is better to know about the correct grammatical usage of the eight parts of speech in English so as to avoid common errors.

Firstly, we shall learn about the usage of Nouns, which are the most essential words. A Noun may also be called a ‘naming word’ because it is defined as the name of a person, place or thing. Nouns are classified into two types: Concrete Nouns and Abstract Nouns.
Look at these words: Srikanth , chair, sugar, army, silver.

These are names of persons or things that we can see and touch. Such nouns are called Concrete Nouns since they exist physically or materially.

Look at these words: beauty, youth , enjoyment ,  knowledge , astrology.

These are the names of things that we can only think of, but can neither touch nor see. They do not have any physical existence and can express a quality (e.g. patience), a state (e.g. death), a feeling (e.g. pleasure) or an action (e.g. flight). These  nouns are called Abstract Nouns.

Concrete Nouns are further divided into four groups.

Proper Nouns: Names of particular persons, places or things. e.g. Ravi(boy), London(place), Colgate (toothpaste). They begin with a capital letter.
Common Nouns: Names that can be applied to any one of a class of persons, places or things. e.g. girl,  flower, sheep.
Collective Nouns: Names of groups of persons or things of the same kind, which can be considered as a single whole. E.g.  flock,  team, crowd.
Material Nouns: Names of materials or substances out of which things are made. e.g. wood, glass, gold.
Without going much into the details of rules, we shall now look into the correct usage of some Nouns which are often wrongly used.
