HYDERABAD: About 19,100 students applied for 3,000 seats in the IIITs this year. The deadline to submit applications ended on July 25.
While 78 per cent of the applicants are from the rural schools, the remaining 22 per cent are from urban schools.
This year, the number of applicants from urban areas has increased significantly because of the change in admissions policy.
In the past three years, the IIIT was forced to do away with “rural quota policy“ following the directions of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies had reserved 80 per cent of the total seats for students from rural areas. However, it was forced to do away with “rural quota policy“ this year following the directions of the AP High Court, which struck down the earlier admissions policy saying that it was “unconstitutional.” With this, the RGUKT has opened gates for urban students on par with rural students. However, it has decided to give more weightage for rural students during final selection. This move too has been challenged in the HC.
The counselling for final selection will be held on August 22 and 23 and classes will commence from August 29.
