Getting an engineering or a medical seat in a good college this year is going to be tough with the number of aspirants likely to increase massively.Statistics obtained from the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) reveal that EAMCET aspirants are likely to touch the four lakh figure with candidates in engineering likely to increase by nearly 40,000 and medical stream aspirants by 25,000.
This year 4,74,484 candidates have registered for Intermediate examinations in the MPC stream, which is an increase by over 50,000 students.Last year, 4,22,875 candidates appeared for the Intermediate exam of which 2,78,974 candidates took the engineering test. With the increase in Intermediate aspirants this year, officials expect the number of engineering aspirants to cross over three lakh.
Similarly, in the BiPC stream, the number of candidates for Intermediate final examinations has increased by about 46,000.This year, 1.78 lakh students have applied for Intermediate exams as against 1,31,102 last year. So, the number of expected candidates for the medical stream of EAMCET is likely to touch 95,000 compared to 68,500 last year. Officials say medical aspirants have been increasing from the year 2010 mainly due to the increase in number of seats in Pharmacy, Biotechnology and Agriculture courses.EAMCET authorities are making arrangements keeping these figures in mind though the final picture would be clear only after the forms are submitted.
N.V. Ramana Rao, the EAMCET convenor, says that about 70 per cent of the MPC stream students take the engineering test while 52 per cent of BiPC students take the medical test.“That's what the previous figures reflect and we are expecting the same this year too. Since the number of students has increased, the number of EAMCET aspirants is likely to increase correspondingly,” he said. However, colleges are sceptical about the growth helping them. They say lot of factors will depend on students joining the engineering course and many agree that the fee reimbursement scheme will play a vital role.
