Varsity hostels in city have no room for genuine boarders.Illegal boarders have occupied all the university hostels in the city, ever since the state government issued a spate of recruitment notifications to fill 1.16 lakh posts in various government departments. The problem is more rampant in Osmania University’s hostels due to its location in the heart of the city, which provides easy access to coaching centres to prepare for recruitment exams like APPSC Group-I, II, DSC teachers recruitment and police recruitment.
The girls’ hostels on the campus, which can accommodate 2,000 students, are overcrowded, with more than 4,000 inmates, half of them non-boarders.The hostels of JNTUHyderabad at Kukatpally are also facing similar problems with several nonboarders in occupation.
Osmania University hostels can accommodate only 7,000 students, but nearly 13,000 students are currently staying here creating severe problems for genuine boarders. Genuine boarders have complained to the authorities that the illegals have forced their way into their rooms saying they are “seniors.” They have been threatening against complaining.
Even the mess authorities are finding it difficult to cope and are threatened by the illegal boarders. They are forced to dilute the quality of food to meet the additional demand.Officials helpless!! OU officials seem to be astonishingly inept in dealing with the issue.
They say they have been trying to evict the nonboarders every year, but encounter stiff resistance from students' unions.
