The decision of the Central government to conduct a single Common Entrance Test for admissions to central technical institutes, like the IITs, IIITs and NITs, seems to have not gone down well with students, teachers and educational institutes in the state. Though it will be a relief for students, as they will be saved from appearing for multiple tests like IIT-JEE, AIEEE etc, there are certain concerns.
The reason? The 50 per cent weightage that the entrance test will give to 10+2 marks being contemplated by the Centre. Students and parents are apprehensive of the ‘evaluation system’ being adopted by the Board of Intermediate Education terming it as ‘erroneous and faulty’, and are urging the state government to set things right at BIE before students are affected.
Some parents say the Centre should implement the new initiative from 2014 so that it will be applicable to the fresh batch of students who take admission in 10+2 courses this year.
“Students who have already completed the first year of their Intermediate course this year will be at a loss as they were not aware of the 50 per cent weightage for 10+2 marks in IITs, NITs and IIITs from 2013.
Moreover, in the existing format, students lay less focus on 10+2 exams and concentrate on IIT-JEE, AIEEE etc. It would be better if it is implemented from 2013 since the fresh batch of students will prepare accordingly in advance,” said M. Surya Narayana, a senior lecturer.
