Medical quota rules criticised as unjustified
Posted on : 28-07-2012 Source : Hyderabad : Deccan Chronicle

A row over the quota has cropped up in MBBS seat allotment at the NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) done as part of the ongoing Eamcet medical counselling. Students from the general category complained that the NTRUHS officials were allotting seats to students from the reserved quota in violation of the Supreme Court's orders issued in 2010.
Currently, reserved quota students are allowed to opt for seats in the merit quota based on their Eamcet rank in the counselling.

However, all the students will be allowed to opt for “sliding“ after the first phase of counselling, wherein they will have a choice to change to colleges of their choice if vacancies exist.

In this way, around 535 reserved quota students, who secured MBBS seats through the merit quota in the first phase of counselling this year, later “slid“ to other colleges in the second phase by claiming their reservation.

The 535 vacancies that arose in the merit quota on account of “sliding“ of reserved quota students were filled with the same reserved quota students, while the SC orders stipulate that those seats should be offered to “immediate next merit students“ irrespective of categories.

The OC students alleged that they lost around 535 MBBS seats on account of this, leading to reserved quota students bagging 80 per cent of the total seats.

The OC Welfare Association has decided to file a review petition in AP High Court on July 30 over the “injustice“ meted to general category students in the allotment of MBBS seats.

However, the NTRUHS officials clarified that they were following the orders issued by the state government in this regard in 2001.

“The GO states that the seats vacated by reserved quota students in merit quota should be filled with the same reserved quota students. This is being followed since 2001,“ said T.
Venugopala Rao, registrar, NTRUHS.
