Spot admission norms to befinalised on October 26
All vacant seats in engineering and pharmacy colleges will be given to the colleges for spot admissions as the government has decided not to go in for the third phase of counselling.
Officials said that the Deputy Chief Minister, Damodar Rajanarsimha, was not in favour of third counselling, so the colleges will be allowed to make spot admissions for the remaining vacancies. The modalities including extending the possibility of fee reimbursement to spot admissions will be finalised at a meeting to be held on October 26. As of now, students who get admitted through spot admissions are not eligible for fee reimbursement.
The government is not keen on the third phase as it involves enormous amounts of money and human resources and there is likely to be poor response as well. But spot admissions allow lot of flexibility to the colleges in terms of admitting new students, transferring students from one branch to another within the same college as well as other colleges. Students who got admitted in management quota also have a chance to move into convenor quota. More than a lakh seats remain vacant in both the convenor and management quota after two phases of counselling.
Colleges are desperate to admit students even at a lesser fee as they are assured of four years’ fee. Only the top 250 colleges might benefit with the spot admissions, while colleges which don’t find favour with students, particularly those located in the rural areas, may lose some of the already admitted students. Colleges with low admissions will be the worst hit as students would prefer to move out to colleges with better admissions.
Unlike web counselling they can pick and choose the college and the course during spot admissions.
Inspections to continue
Meanwhile, the government is firm on continuing inspections despite strong opposition from a certain section of colleges. Mr. Rajanarasimha is said to be in favour of extending some time for the colleges to fulfil the norms if they seek some time, but inspections will be done.
The last date for colleges to be ready for inspections ends on October 29.
