City second in the race for IITs
Posted on : 24-12-2012 Source : Hyderabad : Deccan Chronicle

Hyderabad stood second in the country this year for sending the most number of students to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The highest number of students who got into the prestigious institutions came from Jaipur.

This year as many as 2,135 students from the city got selected for IITs as against 2,680 students from Jaipur.

Delhi stood third at 2,050 students while only 389 students from Chennai (14th place) made the cut.
Better training facilities offered by corporate colleges and coaching centres in the city that especially train applicants to crack nati onal-level competitive exams is said to be the reason for this flood into the IITs.

Prominent coaching institute groups in AP such as Sri Chaitanya, Narayana, FIITJEE, Delta, Ramaiah etc. have been bagging hundreds of seats in IITs for the last four-five years.

While there are approximately, 9,500 seats in 15 IITs, about 2,375 seats, amounting to 25 per cent, were secured by students from the state alone this year.

Hyderabad also holds the distinction of securing AllIndia first ranks for two years in a row (the last two years) and of bagging maxi
mum ranks in the top-10 for the past three years.

In the process, the city has overtaken Kota in Rajasthan, which was considered the national hub for coaching for engineering and medical competitive exams.

“The success of our students in IITs is due to increased awareness among parents. They motivate their children to get seats in institutions of national repute, be it engineering, medical or any other course, right from Class VIII. Five years ago, this was not the case.
City overtakes Kota as coaching hub 2,135 city students got selected for IITs this year 2,375 (25 per cent) out of 9,500 IIT seats were secured by AP students The city has been secu ring All-India first ranks for 2 years in a row With Hyderabad being ranked second in the country this year for sending the most number of students to the IITs, Ms Sushma Sri Bopanna, academic director, Sri Chaitanya Group, which bagged national first rank in IIT-JEE in 2011, said, “Parents now want their children to secure seats not just in engineering or medical colleges, but in top national-level institutes to ensure that their wards have better job opportunities and a better future.” Encouraged by the results achieved here, students from all major cities across the country come to Hyderabad to take admissions in corporate colleges and coaching centres to crack national-level competitive exams.

Though the IIT-JEE pattern has been changed from 2013, Ms Sushma expressed confidence that AP in general and the city in particular would continue to perform better as students were being given in-depth training in all concepts coupled with a lot of practice tests. She felt that the changes would not make much of a difference.
