After high tuition fees and parents’ educational qualifications, it’s the distance between school and home that weighs the most with schools admitting students.
Several city schools deny admission to students if their homes are more than three to five km from the school.
Parents are angry with this requirement which they see as a pretext to deny admission since they are willing to arrange transport for their wards themselves.
This is what happened to parents who applied to a
prominent school in Miyapur. “The officials at the school made it clear that admission will be given only for those whose homes are within three-km radius of the school. They sought residence proof such as electricity bill, domestic gas bill etc. within 30 minutes to process my application. Though I requested them that I would shift my house by the time the school opens in June 2013, they denied the seat for my kid,” said Vikram Aleti.
There are several other conditions too.
Some schools in the city give priority to students whose siblings are already studying in the school, while others want parents to have better educational qualifications.
Though the Right to Education Act stipulates that admissions should not be denied on any grounds, it remains only on paper.
