Mumbai: Several students who were pinning their hopes on a plea filed in the Supreme Court, seeking to fill vacant seats in government medical colleges, were left disappointed on Friday. Parents from the state had filed a petition seeking extension of admission dates to fill the six vacant seats in state's government colleges. However, that petition was withdrawn after a similar case filed by a Delhi-based NGO on filling up of vacant seats across the country, was dismissed by the apex court, marking a closure for all aspirants who were hoping against hope to get a medical seat this year.
For many aspirants, the only option left is to attempt NEET again next year. Dr Subodh Sirur, parent of a medical aspirant, said, "There was a delay in getting details on vacant seats. The numbers were ambiguous. The court had already given an extension to fill medical seats and it's over three weeks now that admissions were closed."
"There are at least 20 students with higher scores in both CET and NEET who are still without seats. This was a criminal waste of seats, even if there are only six. The government should have ensured that all seats were filled. Students have lost out on the opportunity because of the multiple litigations and the delays," said a parent.
