Students told to develop passion for work
Posted on : 31-08-2009 Source : The Hindu

VISAKHAPATNAM: Managing Director of Saint-Gobain PAM (pipes) India, Mumbai, Raju Dayani, has said that there are no short cuts to success and ethics are important to stay ahead in the present day world.

Addressing students at the 10th convocation of GITAM Institute of International Business (GIIB) here on Saturday, Mr. Raju said that a degree was not an end in itself but the means for another end. It was not only the result but also the means to achieve it that mattered. He advised students to develop a passion for work and use their experience prudently. Mr. Raju recalled his contribution to achieving a turnaround for the loss-making Gunnebo India as its vice-president.

Director of the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode Debashish Chatterjee stressed the importance of concentration in whatever one did, connecting with people in developing values in relationship and mutual trust and creativity driven by passion in profession. He said it was unfortunate that the present generation was characterised by “attention deficiency.”

Alternative career

Chief Mentor of Symbiosys Technologies Oruganti Naresh Kumar, a former student of GITAM, hailed the infrastructure at the institute as one of the best in the country. He wanted students to also look at teaching profession as an alternative career.

He underlined the importance of attendance right from the student days. He announced a cash award of Rs.1 lakh for the best performance in academics and in attendance on behalf of Symbiosys Technologies.  President of GITAM University M.V.V.S. Murthi presided.

Mr. Naresh Kumar was conferred the honorary Fellowship of GIIB for his path-breaking contribution in the field of International Business.

A total of 104 students of the outgoing PGDM (B) batch (2007-09) were awarded Post Graduate Diploma in Management (International Business) at the convocation.

Medal-winners

The President’s gold medal for all-round performance was given to Sameer Kumar. The gold medal for best academic performance went to Pawan Kumar. Ritun Mishra, Jayashree Mandal and Niharika bagged the silver and bronze medals.

Swetha Vahini Palagiri, Piyush Baid and Nikhil Gupta bagged cash awards of Rs.50,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs.20,000 respectively for securing the first, second and third ranks.

Ms. Swetha Vahini also bagged a cash award of Rs.1 lakh from Symbiosys Technologies for the best academic performance and attendance for the 2008-10 batch.  Director of GIIB V.K. Kumar spoke.

GITAM University Vice-Chancellor M. Gangadhara Rao, GITAM vice-president V. Sitaramaiah and Chairperson of the convocation T. Ravinath were among those who were present.
