Around 355 stuSept. 27: Around 355 students out of a total 6,000 selected for the IIITs in Idupulapaya, Nuzividu and Basar have opted to join junior colleges due to delayed admissions.
This decision came as a shock to officials as the state government spends Rs 1 lakh per annum on each student to give free education including accommodation.
The admissions were delayed due to irregularities in the selection process following which officials were forced to revise the selection list. With almost 80 per cent of the seats being reserved for rural students, schools had resorted to irregularities and secured "rural status."
Several students were angry after the selection list was released in August as they did not find their names on it. Following the uproar, the list was withdrawn and fresh list was prepared with modifications in September.
Officials have decided to allot the vacant seats to other students on the waiting list. Prof K.C. Reddy, incharge Vice-Chancellor, RGUKT said: "We will allot the vacant seats to the `next best' students figured in the waiting list. We will ensure the seat-matrix remains the same according to the data."
