The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University has asked all its affiliated engineering colleges to organise "freshers' party" for first year students in October to avoid juniors being ragged.
In many colleges, first year students are ragged till the freshers' day which is normally organised in December. "There are stringent antiragging measures in place.
There could be minor ragging incidents that don't come to our notice. Usually juniors are ragged until freshers day. We thought that if we can hold the freshers' day early, we can minimise ragging," said Dr E. Saibaba Reddy, registrar, JNTU. The university has also decided to permit NGOs to visit colleges and counsel students on ragging.
