SSC exam: KGBVs gear up to repeat last year’s show
Posted on : 26-02-2010 Source : The Hindu

174 out of 207 students passed the exam in 2008-09

The schools set up under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan

251 students appearing for SSC this year

VISAKHAPATNAM: Students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBVs) set up under the Central government’s Sarva Siksha Abhiyan are gearing up to face the forthcoming SSC examination. In the 2008-09 examination, 174 of the 207 students that appeared from nine schools passed the examination recording a pass percentage of 84.

A total of 16 KGBVs have been set up in the district beginning 2004-05 when the scheme was launched to promote girl child education. Dropouts among girls are enrolled in the schools.

In the first year, five schools were opened with classes 6, 7 and 8. Girls, who are dropouts, are identified in enrolment drive ‘Badibata,’ besides those identified by non-governmental organisations and joined in bridge schools are enrolled and those who remain dropout for a year are directly admitted. The schools are set up mostly in rural and tribal areas.

Pass percentage

Students from Rolugutna, Devarapalli, Munchingput, G. Madugula, Chintapalli, Hukumpeta, Araku Valley, Paderu and Padmanabham KGBVs appeared for the SSC examination in 2008-09. Devarapalli (29 out of 29), Munchingput (30 out of 30) and G. Madugula (20 out of 20) schools achieved hundred per cent result and at Rolugunta 22 out of 23 passed.

The pass percentage of 84 is better than the overall 80.24 per cent for SSC in the district for 2008-09 and the 76 per cent of girls. Of the 174 KGBV students, who passed, 151 got first class and 23 second class.

“This has been made possible by special coaching, providing study material and grouping students so as to promote learning together,” says SSA (Rajiv Vidya Mission) Project Officer Misala Suryanaryana. Besides, students in residential schools do well.

This year too from the nine schools, 251 students are to take the SSC examination. Besides implementing the earlier steps that gave good result, experienced teachers are taking classes to maintain the performance, adds Mr. Suryanarayana.
