HYDERABAD: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University – Hyderabad (JNTUH) has decided to extend five per cent attendance waiver to all the candidates in its jurisdiction for the forthcoming examinations. The decision was taken keeping in view the disturbances during the last few months owing to Telangana agitation and also the recent disturbances in the old city that led to closure ofcolleges for several days.
Eligibility
The JNTUH Vice Chancellor, D.N. Reddy, said that several students could not attend classes even if colleges functioned in some places. The concession will be applicable for first year and second semester students of second, third and final year.
The five per cent waiver means that students with 60 per cent attendance can also write examinations this time.
Additional waiver
Though 75 per cent attendance is mandatory, an additional 10 per cent waiver is given on medical grounds as per university rules. To avail this facility, however, students need to submit a medical certificate and also pay some fee.Student organisations were demanding that attendance be relaxed or else thousands of students will lose an opportunity to write examinations.
The University discussed the issue thoroughly and took the decision to relax it by five percent.
However, Prof. Reddy made it clear that this will be a one-time concession only. The University has been facing problems with students on the attendance issue despite some strict measures.
In fact, last year the Vice-Chancellor received anonymous threat calls on the attendance issue as well as the evaluation of answer scripts.
