SU teaching faculty prefer giving classes a miss
Posted on : 30-10-2010 Source : The Hindu

The university faculty hardly concerned about academic schedules

Thanks to the isolated location of the varsity, the teaching faculty are having a gala time

Some members of the teaching faculty are busy instigating students to organise agitations

KARIMNAGAR: The budding Satavahana University (SU), which is plagued by several problems such as lack of infrastructure and other developmental programmes due to shortage of funds, is further burdened by the officials manning the University College at the shores of LMD reservoir on the outskirts of Karimnagar town.

Distant dream

Thanks to the isolated location of the university, tucked away from the rest of the town, the teaching faculty are having a gala time.

They can come and go anytime and no one is bothered about the conduct of classes. There are several departments where the conduct of classes by the faculty is a distant dream in spite of D-Day (December 31) fast approaching.

Questionable recruitment

Students alleged that the authorities manning the University College are bent upon shelling out the university funds for their selfish gains. They said that the chemistry department in the university has a full-fledged faculty with a professor, three assistant professors, a contract lecturer, four lab assistant etc. But, still the authorities have appointed a part-time lecturer in the department against the university rules, burdening the exchequer, they charge.

“Where is the need to appoint a part-time lecturer in physical chemistry when there is a qualified teaching faculty in the university college,” they question and allege that the ‘expert' in physical chemistry never took any class for the benefit of students and he enjoys various posts against the norms.

Directions ignored

Another big problem in the university is the abstention of the available teaching faculty. It is alleged that majority of teaching faculty do not stay in Karimnagar and come from Warangal and Hyderabad. University Vice-Chancellor Md. Iqbal Ali gave directions instructing the teaching faculty to reside in place of posting, but in vain.

Menace

Meanwhile, some members of the teaching faculty have become a big menace for the university authorities as they are instigating the students to organise agitations. Incidentally, this information was received by even Minister for Higher Education D Sridhar Babu, who inquired with the university authorities also. While all other educational institutions are busy completing the syllabus by December 31, the university faculty are least concerned about the academic activities. The students also allege that there are large-scale irregularities in the appointment of academic consultant for the Pharmacy department. Several departments do not have expert faculty and are relying solely on the academic consultants and part-time lecturers.
