VISAKHAPATNAM: A short film depicting the shortcomings of the education system in rural areas evoked good response from students who have expressed readiness to exhibit it.
The short film was made by a professor of AU School of Distance Education, Vijay Kumar, and Vice-Chancellor Beela Satyanarayana released it at a recent seminar on the Right to Education.
It depicts the teacher-student turnout, lack of infrastructure and basic amenities, and their not being properly used when available, the impact of poverty, illiteracy, ill-health and exploitation and how a family suffers when the bread-winner falls prey to the bottle.
After seeing the film at Satavahana and other hostels on Wednesday, students said they would screen it in rural and tribal areas in summer holidays. They expressed the view that a barring a few who came up to university-level many could not compete in the job market with those who studied in corporate schools.
In spite of the Right to Education, implementing mid-day meal scheme to prevent dropout rate, Sarva Siksha Abhian and Madhyamika Siksha Abhiyan, it might take a long time for students in rural and tribal areas to catch up, the students said.
Prof. Vijay Kumar assured them CDs in Telugu would be provided them in a week.
