HYDERABAD: Wit h normalcy returning slowly on the Osmania University campus, the hotbed of Telangana agitation that had witnessed continuous spells of aggression and tension in the last few months, the focus is now shifting to academics. At least it appears so if the goings on on the campus are any indication.
At a recent meeting between representatives of various student organisations, the Students Joint Action Committees (SJAC) and the university management, a majority of the student representatives are learnt to have consented to sit for all examinations to ensure smooth completion of the current academic year.
Confirming this development, OU in-charge vicechancellor Prof DN Reddy said a majority of the students were willing to sit for the examinations for the current academic year scheduled to be held from May 9.
He felt that the Telangana protests intensified after the Sri Krishna Committee report was made public and this had resulted in postponement of PG semester exams scheduled from December 18, 2010.
“The PG and professional courses examinations in January were boycotted by the students of the university colleges and many from the affiliated colleges. The OU management conducted exams separately for foreign students,” Reddy said.
“Necessary preparations are underway for conducting the PG second and fourth semester exams from May 9. April 30 is the last working day for the current semester,” the vice-chancellor said.
A committee appointed to select the new vice-chancellor was likely to visit the campus on April 9 to shortlist the candidates, he said.
He informed that the university had secured 10 new research projects from the University Grants Commission (UGC) which could help hundreds of students get employment.
The university had received more funds from the UGC and other national agencies to promote research and advancement of knowledge, he added.
“A new record has been created in campus placements with Infosys, Wipro Technologies, Cognizant and Accenture, offering 478 jobs to the final year students of BE, ME and MCA. Out of these, 390 job offers have been accepted by students,” he said.
