HYDERABAD: In a further boost to its image as centre of excellence, the University of Hyderabad added two more institutes of repute to its list yesterday.
The CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences was inaugurated by MS Gill, minister of statistics and programme implementation, while the Biological and Environmental Sciences Institute was inaugurated by chief minister N.Kiran Kumar Reddy at a function on the campus.
Speaking about CR Rao, an eminent mathematician, Gill opined that people of such calibre should be recognised by the country which it often fails to do so.
He assured that the government would do much more for the institute in the coming years. Stressing that education alone could bring about changes in the society, chief minister said that the Congress government was striving to provide education to all.
“We have allotted Rs. 3,500 crore budget for providing scholarships to 25 lakh students in the state. Though its a burden to the state exchequer we are determined to stick to it,’’ he said.
Stating that establishing the institution was his dream, CR Rao said he hoped the institute would help make the state the science capital of the country.
He also thanked the Prime Minister for releasing Rs. 15 crore for the institute.
The campus housing the two institutes is named ‘Ramanuja’ for which funding has been made by both state and the Central governments.
