Govt junior colleges give pvt institutions run for their money
Posted on : 29-04-2011 Source : The Times of India

Hyderabad: Shattering the myth that private college education in the state is better, it were the students of government colleges in the state who scripted success stories when the intermediate public examination-2011 results were declared. While several students from government colleges in the state scored over 90 per cent marks, some did extremely well and even outdid rankers of private institutions.

In fact, it is not just students from government colleges who have done well in the intermediate examinations this year. While the pass percentage of private colleges in the state is 62.4 per cent, the score of government colleges is 65 per cent.

Among those who have done their government colleges proud include K Vamsi Krishna from SRR Government Junior College, Vijayawada who scored a whopping 975 out of 1000 marks and is now preparing for Eamcet and hopes to make it to a good engineering college.

Krishna says that he joined the government college after scoring 566 marks out of 600 in SSC as his parents, Shiva Subbarao and Sandhya Rani, both government college doctors in Vijayawada were against private education. “They told me that I could score good marks even by studying in a government college. And I proved them right,” said Krishna. He now figures in the list of the top 100 ranks holders in the state.

It is not just those who made a conscious choice to study in government colleges that scored well in intermediate. A student, D Adambee from Government Girls Junior College, Koyalakuntla, Kurnool, who scored 962 marks in MPC stream said that she was not too keen to join a government college at first but her parents Hussainamma and Moula Ali, daily wage labourers from Revanur asked her to take admission in one as they could not afford private education. “I was forced to opt for a government college as I could not afford to join a private college where fee ranged from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000. But I have no regrets now,” said Adambee. Adambee is now planning to write Eamcet and also DIETCET which will land her a seat in a Teacher Training Course (TTC). “I am a little worried that I have not taken coaching for Eamcet. But that is fine, I’ll try my luck,” said a confident Adambee.

Other students from government colleges who have done well include Sheik Reshma Begum from Government Junior College for Girls, Kadapa, who scored 951 marks in BiPC stream. Another student, T H Uzma Muzha, from Gunfoundry, Hyderabad, scored 928 marks in the commerce stream.

“Government colleges in the state have qualified staff and a lot more funds for academic development than private colleges. Hence, the quality of education in these colleges is better than that of corporate colleges that flout many rules prescribed by the Board of Intermediate Education,” said Madhusudan Reddy, general secretary, government junior college lecturers’ association. The performance of students have also improved as the state government has been concentrating on improving the performance of students since 2000. Now, government college students will be given Eamcet coaching in 23 centres in the state.

Government colleges in some of the districts scored high pass percentages which is much above the state average of 63.27 per cent. While Adilabad scored the highest percentage of 83.05, districts including Nizamabad and Chittoor have the second and third highest pass percentages in the state with 75.82 and 70.59 respectively.
