85 per cent local seats filled first, in line with the A.P. High Court order
Many want to attend counselling again on May 2 when non-local 15 p.c. seats would be taken up
VIJAYAWADA: Counselling for admissions to medical PG degree and diploma courses began at the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences here on Thursday with the 85 per cent local seats filled first, in line with the A.P. High Court order.
Top rankers took admissions in their respective local areas but most of them expressed their desire to attend the counselling again on May 2 when non-local 15 per cent seats would be taken up. First ranker Sambaturu V Kartik took MD (general medicine) seat in Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, but announced his decision to come back to seek a seat in a better college in Hyderabad in the unreserved quota.
University Registrar T. Venugopala Rao, in a statement, asked all candidates including ‘service candidates' to attend the counselling from Friday as the schedule given earlier would remain cancelled in view of the revised procedure of counselling.
Candidates, who had already opted for seats in local category, could also attend the process, he added.
After receiving his admission letter, Mr. Kartik told the mediapersons that he had nothing to talk about the rules of the counselling, but that he would return to the counselling on May 2. He desires to choose the best seat in a college of his choice if available in the unreserved quota when he attends for the second time.
Second ranker Keerthika Chowdary also took admission into MD (general medicine) in Andhra Medical College and said that she had no intention of coming back to the counselling for unreserved seats. As there were no seats of her choice available in unreserved quota, she decided to continue at the AMC in Vizag.
The university authorities made elaborate arrangements and security was increased on the university premises considering the mood among the students. The students, who got court order in favour of local seats, met the observers of the counselling and also university authorities who clarified their doubts on various aspects of the process.
